Pierre is a rural community of approximately 14,000 residents located in central South Dakota’s Hughes County. Lying on the banks of the Missouri River below the Oahe Dam and Lake Oahe, Pierre is the State Capital and the major trade center of South Dakota's central region. It enjoys a mixed economy derived from government, agriculture and outdoor recreational attractions.

             The median age of Pierre’s population is 37.5 with 52% females and 48% males. Of this population 90% are White and nearly 9% are of Native American Heritage. Unemployment is low with government jobs representing 37% of the workforce. The median family income in Pierre is $52,144. Pierre has a high percentage of families with both parents working. In families with children under age 6, 75% have both parents in the workforce. The adults in Pierre are well educated with approximately 8,250 of those over age 25 having at least a high school diploma. Nearly 3,300 have bachelors or advanced degrees. A majority of families own their own home while 37% are renters. The median home value is $116,000.

 

      Pierre is the home of Capital University Center which offers degrees from six different public universities including: Black Hills State University, Dakota State University, Northern State University, South Dakota School of Mines and Technology, South Dakota State University and University of South Dakota. It is also home to state and federal government agencies, including the State Library, as well as many state associations, all providing excellent resources to our school system. The Pierre School District works cooperatively with Education Service Agency 6 (ESA-6).

      The Pierre community has provided a long history of support for its schools. The staff and patrons of the Pierre School District foster a cooperative spirit with the community of Pierre through several programs including:  Right Turn, Advanced High, Character Education, Youth to Youth, Junior Achievement, Retired Senior Volunteer Program, the Mentorship Program for Students at Risk, Fine Arts and Athletic Booster Clubs, and Native American Liaison. Pierre Riggs High School also hosts Adult Education classes, and the Riggs Theatre is home to the Community Concert Series and the Short Grass Arts Council. The Pierre School District works in cooperation with the City Recreation Department in facility utilization. Pierre School District is currently in partnership with the Capital University Center providing classrooms and technology.  The Pierre Education Foundation provides financial support for innovative Pierre educators through grants. 

      Pierre School District is expanding communication through the use of the Oahe Cable Channel by broadcasting School Board meetings, the "Its Your School" program, and Fine Arts presentations by the High School and Middle School.
